A tall, robust, and handsome plant, a native of the Alps, but kept in our gardens. It grows five or six feet in height: the stalk is round, thick, striated, and hollow, very firm and upright, and but little branched. The leaves are very large, and they are divided into a great number of parts, by fives and by threes; they are of a yellowish green. The flowers are small and white, but they stand in great tufts or umbels at the tops of the stalks: the seeds follow, two after each flower, and they are oblong, broad, and edged with a leafy border; they are of a dark colour, a strong smell, and acrid taste.

The seeds are the only part used; they promote the menses, and the necessary discharges after delivery, and are an excellent warm and cordial medicine; they work also gently by urine, and cure colicky pains; they arc to be given in powder or infusion.
